Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV), Dies in Hospital


Senator Robert Byrd, 92, of West Virginia, a former leader and recruiter in the Ku Klux Klan and the undisputed King of Pork for both houses of Congress, passed away Monday at Inova Hospital, Fairfax, VA. Despite his racist past, he was treated with utmost respect by his colleagues because of his position of power as head of the Senate Appropriations committee.

"Bob is a living encyclopedia, and legislative graveyards are filled with the bones of those who underestimated him," former House Speaker Jim Wright, D-Texas, once said in remarks Byrd later displayed in his office.
