285 Indian Girls Shed Names That Mean "Unwanted" in Hindi

An AP/Yahoo article highlights a type of gender discrimination that would be considered incomprehensible by Americans. In the Satara district in Maharashtra state, nearly 300 girls gladly gave up the names "Nakusa" or "Nakushi," which mean "unwanted" in Hindi, and took on new names they chose for themselves in a public ceremony.
