Maj. Scott Southworth, who served with a military police unit of the Wisconsin National Guard in Iraq, discovered and waded through miles of red tape to adopt an Iraqi boy with cerebral palsy, Ala'a Eddeen. It didn't help that he was single, lacked money, and had no experience in taking care of children with disabilities. But with persistence, faith, bonding with Ala'a, persistence, and a series of fortunate events (yes, I know I mentioned "persistence" twice), he was able to bring the child to the United States, provide him with better medical care than was available to him in Iraq, and legally adopt him.
