Seared in Our Memories

Today is the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York, Washington, DC, and Shanksville, PA. Hard work and cooperation made it possible for the Pentagon to be repaired and a memorial chapel to be dedicated near the crash site in Pennsylvania, but the ongoing effort to build the Freedom Tower and a memorial to the victims of 9/11 is still mired in discord and controversy. A Blog for All will provide coverage of this historic event all day today.

I was in Chicago on the way to class that morning. By the afternoon I was a zombie flipping through all the stations. Here in Italy this Sept 11 I was conversing with a national who believed that the crash at the Pentagon never happened, that it was made up. I asked him on what was this belief based on more importantly why. All he could say was he got it from the Moore movie.
After letting a few spit words fly I felt that sick feeling again. I said, "What do you do about the plane's manifest? The innocent people, was that made up? I believe there are degrees of punishment in the end. One place reserved for perpetrators of untruth.

On the morning of September 11th, I turned on the TV to watch the news, and my jaw dropped as I saw one tower of the World Trade Center in flames. At first I thought someone was making a movie and that this was just a special effect - until the second plane crashed into the WTC and reports of another hitting the Pentagon started streaming in. If I were 30 years younger, I would have been talking to a military recruiter that very day!

To this day there are "truthers" who suspect that 9-11 was an inside job concocted by the Bush Administration. And many people in the Islamic world are convinced that Jews were forewarned and avoided going to work that day, although if you look at any list of the victims you will find many names that are obviously Jewish.
