Authorities called off a search for a red-maned lion which 3 witnesses reported seeing about 15 miles east of Colorado Springs, somewhere between Peyton and Calhan. One of them took a grainy picture with a cell-phone camera, but so far search dogs have not been able to find a scent, and none of the four wildlife sanctuaries in the area report any missing lions. If there really were a lion, it would probably find a place to sleep during the day and come out at night to feed. A profile of a real lion is shown on right, so that you can make a side-by-side comparison.
UPDATE: Many people suspect that the animal may be a large dog rather than a lion. But if a local rancher reports that one of his cows or steers is missing, we can probably conclude that it is a lion after all.
