Murdoch Closes Down Britain's Oldest Newspaper!

Rupert Murdoch, acting through his son James, has ordered the closure of the tabloid News of the World, according to an ABC News article. His international news empire has been shaken to the roots because the paper was charged with hacking into the voicemails of over 4,000 people, including crime victims and relatives of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The last issue of the newspaper will be published on Sunday. There are reports that several people will be arrested in the next few days.

An article in the New York Times says that closing News of the World is Murdoch's attempt at damage control. Eventually the paper may be reorganized or resume publication under a different name. Also, according to this article, Murdoch is anxious to salvage his attempt to gain a controlling interest in British Sky Broadcasting.
