
The SFGate Web site has an interesting tale about a spongy mushroom discovered in the rain forest of Borneo that was named after the cartoon character SpongeBob Squarepants.
Dennis E. Desjardin, a world-roaming mycologist, has just identified, described and named the curious fungal blob that a team of colleagues brought to his laboratory at San Francisco State University. It looks nothing like your standard mushroom with a cap and stem, but much more like a sponge, bright orange and squishy, and about the size of an egg....
